On Wednesday 11th November, over 250 representatives from across Central Scotland celebrated the 10th anniversary of OPALS 50+ Exercise to Music classes with champagne, canapés and cake.

Classes were started a decade ago at Stirling Rugby Club and very quickly spread to Callander, Buchlyvie, Balfron, Denny. Falkirk and Linlithgow. Classes continue to be held weekly.

Based on their previous work at the University of Stirling, Wendy Evangelisti and Margaret Brett realised that opportunities were limited in the wider community for appropriate exercise for people beyond the age of 50.

OPALS class members enjoy a specially designed exercise programme which suits the needs of the active older adult. It emphasises strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness using music that is carefully chosen from a wide range of styles to appeal to everyone.

The annual programme has also included holidays in Europe, which have been in the Austrian Alps, Italian Lakes, Portugal and Northern Majorca with a varied programme of walking and culture.

Social events and summer walking in Scotland have also been arranged.

Many people have said that an unexpected side benefit has been the opportunity to easily extend their social contacts and friendships. In conjunction with regular exercise this is increasingly being recognised by specialists as a valuable contributor to anyone´s general wellbeing
